Loch Dubhar-sgoth

Water managed by Portree Angling Association

Type
Lake
Species
Brown trout
Moderate alkalinity
High alkalinity indicates water fertility and can signal the presence of larger trout. Fish in alkaline waters have a wider variety of invertebrates to feed on.
Shallow
The depth of a lake has significant impacts on its ecology. Reduced heat and light in deep lakes inhibit algal growth.
Low shoreline complexity
A lake with a high shoreline complexity will have numerous bays, points and peninsulas.
Low elevation
Lakes at a higher altitude can take longer to warm up during the season and may not fish well until summer.
Very small
Larger lakes with good spawning often contain lots of smaller trout. Smaller lakes with limited spawning can produce larger trout.

Loch Dubhar-sgoth is a very small loch of just over 3 hectares, lying in low ground on the Isle of Skye some five kilometres from the coast. It sits in the shadow of the Trotternish ridge, a compact and simply shaped water with a short fetch and a shoreline that curves without great complexity. The loch is of moderate alkalinity, suggesting reasonable productivity for its size, and the water runs clear.

The loch holds brown trout and fishes well early in the season. It is fly only water, shared in character and access with the neighbouring Loch Corcasgil, and both are worth the effort of the walk in. No other details of fish size are recorded here.

Access begins at the Maligar road end, from where the route heads west and south through Glen Connon and over the Bealach Uige — rough ground throughout, and a long walk of around four and a half kilometres before the loch comes into view. The going demands good footwear and a patient pace.
