Lochan Dubh Mhic Aonghais lies in the low ground of Highland, barely half a kilometre from the coast. It is a very small water of roughly 3 hectares, with a moderately indented shoreline that creates a few shallow bays. The loch is generally shallow despite reaching moderate depths in places, and the water has low alkalinity typical of Highland waters.
The route follows a short track north from the starting point, covering just over 200 metres through the coastal moorland to reach the southern shore of the loch.
