The Kilmaluag is a small spate river in the north of Skye, running down to the sea at Kilmaluag Bay. It depends on rain to fish, coming into its own when a good spate brings fresh water off the hill and draws fish up from the tide. Between floods it drops quickly and runs low.

The river holds runs of sea trout, with the occasional salmon among them. Fish come through on the back of a spate, so the best sport follows rain, and sea trout are worth trying into the dusk and after dark. All legal methods are allowed, a deliberate choice to help youngsters take up the sport, so fly, spinning and bait all have their place here.
