Loch a Chaorainn lies in Argyll and Bute, a few kilometres inland from the coast, set among mid-level moorland above Glenbeg. It is a very small, generally shallow loch of roughly 7.5 hectares, averaging around 3 metres in depth. The water has low alkalinity and a simple, rounded shoreline.
The loch holds trout between 8 oz and 1 lb. Access is by the hill track from Glenbeg; the route heads north-east for just under five kilometres, climbing about 260 metres on a straightforward line to reach the loch.
