Loch na Faoileige lies in the Highland interior, around eleven kilometres from the coast, set among open moorland at a middle altitude where the ground rises and the landscape opens out. It is a very small loch of just under 5 hectares, with a simple, gently curved shoreline and a moderate depth for its size. The fetch is short, sheltered by the surrounding terrain, and the water sits quietly in its hollow with little to announce it from a distance.
The loch holds good numbers of trout, and the fish run to a pleasing size. It is not easily reached, and that remoteness likely accounts for the quality of the sport.
Access begins from the A837 and involves a serious walk of roughly an hour and a half across open hill ground. The route heads generally north-west, gaining height steadily before easing across the moor to the loch. Navigation experience is essential — a map and compass should be carried, and the walk should not be hurried. There are other lochs scattered across the ground en route and nearby, and the area rewards those who allow a full day. Fine weather makes the difference between a fine outing and a hard one.
