Loch Mhoalach-coire Loch Gillaroo

Water managed by Assynt Angling Group

Type
Lake
Species
Brown trout

The loch lies in the hill country above Inchnadamph, reached by a walk of roughly an hour and a half from the car park there. The route heads generally east and south-east across open ground, covering something in the region of five to six kilometres before the water comes into view. The surrounding landscape is limestone country — an unusual geology for the far north-west of Scotland, and one that gives the loch a character quite distinct from the peaty acid waters of the neighbouring glens.

Once known as The Gilaroo Loch, the water has a long association with large brown trout. Glass cases in local hotels record fish of over five pounds taken here in earlier years, and though the average size today is considerably more modest, the limestone bed lends the loch a natural fertility that keeps alive the possibility of something exceptional. It is a relatively small water, and that combination of intimate scale and storied history gives it an appeal beyond the merely scenic.

Access is from the Inchnadamph car park. The route climbs away from the strath and works east and south across open moorland and limestone terrain, the ground rising gradually before the loch is reached. Allow a comfortable hour and a half each way.
