Machair lochs of Scotland

Machair is a Gaelic term that describes a low-lying, fertile grassy plain. There are Machair habitats located on the western shores throughout the islands.

The formation of the Machair heavily relies on Atlantic gales. These gales regularly blow sand, mainly composed of crushed shells, onto the shore. Over time, the calcium-rich shell sand is blown into the lochs, which alters the water's alkalinity.

The water's alkalinity plays a critical role in determining the abundance and size of trout populations. High alkalinity levels indicate water fertility, which can signal the presence of larger trout. These fish have a wider variety of invertebrates and small bait fish to feed on, making them less reliant on wind-blown terrestrials.

Due to the lack of good spawning, there is limited competition, which results in some of the largest wild trout you are ever likely to catch in the UK.

This list is not exhaustive, and you may come across Machair lochs or lochs with Machair characteristics in proximity to the west coast of most Scottish Islands. However, the most extensive machair areas are situated on the West Coast of the Uists.
