Migratory run
Salmon run from late June, peaking in July and largely over by the end of August. Sea trout run from June, building to a peak in August and tailing off through September. Spring tides every ~2 weeks bring fresh fish in from the sea to the river mouths.
Next spring tides: 28 Aug – 1 Sep
Sea trout & salmon run Jun–Sep

The Sligachan River rises on the flanks of the Cuillins and responds quickly to rain falling on those high slopes, coming up fast when the hills are wet and dropping again almost as swiftly. In the upper glen the ground is rough and boggy, and the most practical approach is to follow the path along the south bank, dropping down to fish each pool in turn before regaining the path to move on to the next. Fishing is available along the entire south bank and, from the old road bridge downstream, along the north bank as far as the sea.

Salmon

All salmon must be returned.

Safety warning

Rapid rises and wading

  • The river is prone to rapid rises when there is rain on the Cuillins.
  • Even in spate it runs gin-clear, so depth and flow velocity are hard to judge — take great care when wading.
