Loch Fada

Water managed by Portree Angling Association

Type
Lake
Species
Brown trout
Moderate alkalinity
High alkalinity indicates water fertility and can signal the presence of larger trout. Fish in alkaline waters have a wider variety of invertebrates to feed on.
Shallow
The depth of a lake has significant impacts on its ecology. Reduced heat and light in deep lakes inhibit algal growth.
Moderate shoreline complexity
A lake with a high shoreline complexity will have numerous bays, points and peninsulas.
Low elevation
Lakes at a higher altitude can take longer to warm up during the season and may not fish well until summer.
Small
Larger lakes with good spawning often contain lots of smaller trout. Smaller lakes with limited spawning can produce larger trout.

Loch Fada lies close to the Trotternish coast of Skye, within low ground where the catchment is largely peat. It covers roughly 33 hectares and is shallow throughout, with a moderately irregular outline marked by a small island and a rocky northern shore. The water is clear, with moderate alkalinity suggesting reasonable productivity for these latitudes.

The loch holds wild brown trout and is fished from both bank and boat. From a boat, the entire loch is accessible, and the favoured drifts run through the weed beds at the southern end, around the island, and along the rocky northern shore. Bank anglers can work most of the shoreline, though the road-side margin tends to become weedy as the season advances — fishing around rather than through the weed can be productive. A catch-and-release policy applies to all wild brown trout.

The loch is reached from the A855 Portree to Staffin road, with parking at several pull-offs along the verge or beside the boat shed near the dam wall. A small bridge crosses the narrows between Loch Fada and the loch to the north, giving additional access when water levels permit.
