water managed by Galloway Forest Park
Located in Galloway Forest Park, Scotland at approximately NX 466 840. Approach from the A712 New Galloway to Newton Stewart road. A forestry track leads from near Bruce's Stone at Glentrool and follows Glen Trool before climbing through the Dungeon Hills. The loch is situated in a dramatic landscape below the peaks of Craignaw (645m) and Dungeon Hill (669m).
Long Loch of the Dungeon is a small, remote upland loch nestled in the rugged Dungeon Hills of the Galloway Forest Park. It sits in a granite basin at mid-elevation, creating a spectacular setting surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the southern uplands. The loch has shallow, clear waters with low alkalinity and moderate shoreline complexity. Like other lochs in the area, it has suffered from acidification due to industrial pollution and acid rain, but conservation efforts are helping its recovery. The remote location and stunning mountain backdrop make this a truly wild fishing experience, offering solitude and breathtaking scenery for the adventurous angler.
Contains wild brown trout that have adapted to the acidic conditions. The trout tend to be smaller than in more fertile waters, but what they lack in size they make up for in fighting spirit and beautiful coloration. Fish populations have been recovering as water quality improves following acidification.
Bank fishing only in this remote location. As the loch continues to recover from acidification, practicing catch and release is strongly encouraged to support fish population recovery.
Permission isn't required for lochs situated high up in the Galloway National Park.
If you are uncertain, please contact the Forestry Commission Scotland.
Please be aware that this is a natural resource and is still recovering from the effects of acidification. Remember to try and do your bit and return the fish to the water unharmed.
