Shetland Coastal Sea Trout Locations

16 waters

With a coastline spanning over 1600 miles, Shetland presents ample opportunities for sea trout angling. However, the abundance of sea trout has declined since half a century ago, making it challenging to pinpoint the prime locations. Factors such as global warming and over-fishing of sand eels have forced sea trout to adapt, emphasizing the importance of identifying their primary feeding grounds for successful angling.

Sea trout fishing is characterised by its dynamic nature, with fleeting moments of excitement as the fish appear and disappear rapidly. Understanding their diverse diet, which includes shrimp, sand eels, and various small fish, is crucial.

Timing plays a vital role, with the most productive fishing occurring in the two hours before and after low water, when sea trout concentrate in specific areas.
Fishing during stagnant tides is less fruitful, but excitement ensues as the tide changes and prey items become more active.
